Captain Marvel

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=49392930

Jack Parsons was born Marvel Whiteside Parsons on 10/02/1914 in Los Angeles, CA. His father was a captain in the US Army. His name was also Marvel Parsons. That's right: his father was Captain Marvel. His son later changed his name to John, after his father left his mother subsequent to some unpleasantness over an adultery.

He once visited Europe with his mother in 1929, when he would have been about fifteen, but that was the extent of foreign travel for Jack Parsons. He graduated from University Highschool in Pasadena in 1933, but did not go on to college after that. He took some extension courses at UC and University of Southern California, but never obtained a degree.

He became involved with explosives and rocket technology at a very early age, even before his highschool graduation, working for the Hercules Powder Company in Los Angeles in 1932, before moving on to the Halifax Explosives Company in 1934 and finally winding up at GALCIT in 1936, at which time he was barely twenty-two.

The Halloween launch occurred that year.

Parsons inherited a large house in Pasadena after the death of his father, to which he invited a string of houseguests from the occult and science-fiction communities. His interest in occultism ran roughly parallel to his interest in rocket science, and von Karman wrote that Jack used to chant pagan hymns and stamp his feet on the ground in the Arroyo Seco, but that otherwise he was brilliant and a very hard worker, very conscientious, and totally focused on rocketry. Parsons and his childhood friend and fellow rocketeer Edward Foreman had been in regular communication with German and Russian rocket engineers, including the famous Willy Ley, as well as-according to some reports-Igor Sikorsky ( inventor of the Sikorsky helicopter ) and Arthur Young ( who developed the Bell helicopter ). At the age of 13, Parsons claimed he had tried to invoke Satan, but the experience frightened him, and he turned away from occultism for a while and devoted himself to pursuits of an even more.......explosive nature.

In 1939, we find Parsons married to Helen Northrup and joining a cult based in Los Angeles, the OTO or Ordo Templi Orientis. The OTO was one of several occult societies under the leadership of Aleister Crowley, the English magician who received a revelation in Cairo in 1904 which became the basis for a new religion, which Crowley called Thelema, the Greek word for "Will." The OTO was a German secret society that was designed to communicate Tantric and other Eastern sexual practices beneath the clean, white apron of Freemasonry. Crowley usurped leadership of the Order after the death of its previous Master, generating a three-way fight which left one version of the Order adhering to its original rites and purposes, another version-the Brotherhood of Saturn-peeling off to pursue a different dream, and Crowley's OTO becoming in the process the most famous of the three. ...............................................

Today (06/17) is the 54th Anniversary for the Greater Feast of Jack Parsons, one of the most notable thelemites of the last century. I will remember him at Mass today and also make time to read from his writings.

To quote:
48. Now is the hour of birth at hand. Now shall my adept be crucified in the
Basilisk abode.
49. Thy tears, thy sweat, thy blood, thy semen, thy love,
thy faith shall provide. Ah, I shall drain thee like the cup that is of me,
BABALON.
- Liber 49

Be Well!

ISIS
by Jack Parsons

Isis art thou. and from thy life are fed
All showers and suns, all moons that wax and wane,
All stars and streams, the living and the dead.
The mystery of pleasure and pain
Thou art the mother, thou speaking sea
Thou art the earth, and it's fertility,
Life, death, love, hatred, light, darkness return to thee
To Thee!

Hathoor am I, and to my beauty drawn
All glories of the universe bow down,
The blossom and the mountain and the dawn
Fruits blush, and women, our creations crown
Iam the priest{ess}, the sacrifice, the shrine
I the love of life divine
Life, death, light, darkness are surely mine, Are Mine!

Venus art thou, the love and light of earth,
The wealth of kisses, the delight of tears
The barren pleasures never came to birth,
The ininate delight of years. Thou art the shrine at which my long desire
Devoured me with intolerable fire,
Thou wert song, music, passion, death upon my lyre---
My lyre.

I am the Grail and I the glory now:
I am the flame and the fule of thy breast
I am the star of God upon thy brow:
I am the queen, enraptured and possessed,
Hide thee sweet river, welcome to thee, sea
Ocean of love that shall encompass thee
Life, death, hatred, light, darkness return to me---
To Me!

Narcissus
by Jack Parsons

Drug me with drugs; slow acting, sensuous, sweet
Co-mingle Gin and Musk, Hashish and Amber,
Let me drink and breathe
and hear slow devious, music.

Until aroused to sub he langorous moods,
Until I see Ochre and Mazarine
and Purple Emit lascivious sounds.

Then I shall go through dark and Gothic ruins,
Grey and Golden mist; down to a Forest Green,
With an Old Dream.

I shall go naked; and Magnolia and Oleander,
Datura and Jasmine,
Whose blossoms will open and vaginally flower,
In infinite time, for a relative hour,
Whose White subliminal flowers
will caress my breasts.

And I shall perform stately,
Phallic Arabesques,
In the Moonlight Pale and White.

Magical Star Child
by Jack Parsons

I remember
When I was a star
In the night
A moving, burning ember
Amid the bright
Clouds of star fire
Going deathward
To the womb

On the moon
Red Moon of my desire
My sisters’ and my brothers’ fire
Down the great hall of heroes
I the star seed
Wooed the incredible flower

I alone
My need, my power
Attained the dark house
And my bride

I remember
When I was a god
In my hour
And like a god I died
By the deep waters
Crucified

And I dreamed
And the great powers
Moved over me
And a voice cried

Go free, star go free
Seek the dark home On the wild sky
Good bye, star, good bye

Volumes One and Two of his collected films are out on DVD and they are gorgeous! Restored frame by frame to their original clarity and luminous color, with optional commentary by the auteur himself throughout. Anger tells wonderful stories about the making of his films, and the remarkable casts he assembled for them. He also illuminates the magickal imagery and symbolism woven into these films, and the extent and influence that the Magus, Aleister Crowley, had on Anger's vision as a film-maker and magician (Anger sees film-making itself as a magickal act) is discussed in detail. These films are beautiful, timeless, priceless gems and they can be yours to watch again and again, to enjoy, to absorb, and to ponder; at a price that amounts to a gift to humanity! "Lucifer Rising" alone is worth the price of this collection to any aspiring Thelemite! Find these collections at your local hip video vendor or online purveyor of fine digital art! And read about Anger's amazing life on the cutting edge of Western arts for over 50 years. He's on the web, and there is also a biography of him by Bill Landis, and several books about his films available. An amazing tale!

A wonderfully detailed article in LAist - Shocktober: Babalon Working.

Crowley's 'IXth degree' ritual, which was performed by Parsons, Hubbard and Cameron, says this of the Homunculus: 'Now then thou hast a being of perfect human form, with all powers and privileges of humanity, but with the essence of a particular chosen force, and with all the knowledge and might of its sphere; and this being is thy creation and dependent; to it thou art Sole God and Lord, and it must serve thee.'"

Marjorie Cameron Parsons in Kenneth Anger DVD

Movie alert! I recently purchased The Films of Kenneth Anger, Vol. 1 (available on Amazon.com for $19.99), which includes his revolutionary 38-minute film "The Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" (1954), newly restored by the UCLA Film Archive. "Inauguration" is a celebration of mythology in relation to Aleister Crowley's magickal universe. This psychedelic/experimental/avante-garde film is not for everyone, but the appearance of Marjorie Cameron as The Scarlet Woman (and later as the Hindu goddess Kali) will be of special interest to members of the Parsonage tribe. Cameron--in addition to being Jack's wife--was a practitioner of Crowleyan magick and a woman of enormous power. Anais Nin also appears in the film (as Astarte, the ancient Semitic goddess of love and war). As a special bonus, the DVD also includes running commentaries on the films by Kenneth Anger himself. The beauty and strangeness of these films will haunt you for years to come.

P.S. Worth the price alone is the short (13-minute) film called Eaux d'artifice ("Water Works") that's also on the DVD. It was shot in the gardens of the Villa d'Este at Tivoli, near Rome, in 1953. It's considered a forerunner of today's music videos; in fact, MTV has acknowledged Anger as the "godfather" of the music video. Eaux d'artifice is set to the "Winter" concerto in Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," and consists entirely of a mysterious masked woman in 18th-century garb (called the "Water Witch") wandering through the gardens and fountains by moonlight. It is haunting and unearthly--the ultimate Baroque art film. There is one extraordinary moment when the Water Witch stops and opens a fan that she's carrying. I won't describe it any further, lest I ruin it for those who might see it, but the effect is unexpected and spectacular. The simple act of opening a fan. I had to watch it over and over. Kenneth Anger is a genius.

Jack Parsons the Antichrist--in a good way?

Since I'm new here, I hesitate to go so far out on a limb, but what the hey...

I came to know of Jack Parsons through Sex and Rockets and a simultaneous, fortuitious meeting with a distant relative of his.

I was riveted by the few paragraphs or so that made reference to the alleged existence of home videos of Parsons having sex with his mother.

I felt intuitively (i.e. with absolutely no proof) that these videos documented a great magickal act through which Jack Parson's "died" for our sins. That is, Parsons was or might have been a Messiah for the present Aeon by this act. Somehow this act magickally stood for reality turning in on itself, 'self undoing' in an Age chiefly characterized by the annihilation of opposites in one another.

I figured this would be as good a place of any to compare notes with other Parsons fans.

The Witchcraft

Hi there

I'm new to this group, but I've been a long time student of the works of Parsons and Cameron and others who have worked with Babalon.
I saw a post here which reprinted Parson's "The witchcraft" essay and I was wondering if any of you have looked into creating a Witchcraft tradition along the lines envisioned by Parsons, to me it seems an alternative to Wicca, which started out good, but in my opinion hasd been watered down so much by political correctness, newage bullshit and sheer idiocy that it has become a joke. (There are exceptions, but they are few, far between and generally keep quiet). I would love to see a form of witchcraft that embraces the passion, the courage and the comitment to breaking free of society's taboos that Parsons and Cameron demonstrated..

Any thoughts?

What do you think of the casting so far. Billy Zane as JWP, Mila Jovavich as Cameron, Geoffrey Rush as 666 , ed norton as LRH. The movie will commence with JWP meeting LRH proceeding thru the elemental rite to the moonchild rite leaving off with the untimely death of our protagonist .
This may constitute the entire film which will encompass a treatment of JWP's work with JPL and his mundane relationships with Betty , his mother, OTO, AC and various and sundry ancillary persons pertaining to this period. The movie could also make a leap after jack's death to the present day when another half mad hypergenius heeds the otherworldly call of Babalon when he discovers this story and sets out to do it right this time. He can have concluded Jack erred before by failing to keep his mouth firmly shut about the working as he was instructed. This theme could also be filmed as a sequal and has potential to grow into a larger budegt fantasy where the birth of Babalon takes place triggering armageddon .Well, what do you think?

I forget how I stumbled on this e-book, it's been a few months now, but the premise of the novel is a Private Eye who gets hired for a specific purpose, only to find himself digging deep into the secrets of Jack Parson's life and questionable death. It's a pretty neat story...

I was wondering if anyone here found out about Jack through non-occult related studies. I'm interested in what non-occult sources say about him (if you have any good refs, let me know!) Also, do any of you have careers in combustion or similar sciences?

I'm a mechanical engineer, I did combustion research for a while, yet still I didn't know anything about the wonderful Mr. Parsons until I read Sex & Rockets. (Although, I went to school on the east coast. Probably the ME's on the west coast learn about him... maybe.)
